Continuing Optional Life Coverage

While on Military Leave of Absence

When an employee leaves work to fulfill their active military duty, here's a reminder of how to help ensure they continue their Optional Life coverage while they're away and after they come back.

Submit a KPERS-79C Form

As soon as you become aware of an employee who will be taking a leave of absence and removed from payroll, and they wish to continue their life insurance coverage, please have them fill out the Optional Group Life Continuation (KPERS-79C) form. Standard Insurance Company, KPERS' Basic and Optional Life Insurance provider, will bill the employee directly while they are on leave.

Employees have 60 days to submit the KPERS-79C, but they should get it in as soon as possible. This is a busy and possibly stressful time for the employee, and we don't want this step to fall through the cracks.

Enter an End Date

Log in to the Employer Web Portal (EWP) and enter an end date in the monthly premium report and select Military Leave as the termination reason. This will take the employee off the premium report at the right time and will populate in the employee's record.

Continuation of Optional Life lasts for 16 months while on military leave. If the employee has not returned in 16 months, they will need to "convert" to keep coverage through The Standard at 1-844-289-2309 or kpersadmin@standard.com.

When They Return

If an employee returns to work from military leave, look up the employee's member record and click on the End Date link and enter the end date of the military leave and select Return to Payroll. This will put the employee back on the premium report and pay report. Begin deducting premiums again from the employee's pay according to the monthly premium report.

KPERS will notify The Standard to cancel direct billing. The Standard will refund prepaid premiums. Employees returning to work immediately after their active-duty status are reinstated.
